Ball Chairs

We are thrilled to be the chairs for Swan Ball 2019. The experience has been a wonderful reminder to both of us of the grandeur and beauty that Cheekwood brings to our community.

This year, we have sought to create an experience that in every way is designed to honor this incredible local treasure, and to enhance our appreciation of the amazing adventure that can be had in Coming Home to Cheekwood: An American Country Era Estate.

We are grateful to the hundreds of individuals, groups and organizations who have come together to make this event possible. To our fabulous committee, your friendship and encouragement have made work seem like play and challenges turn into opportunities. We love each and every one of you and cannot adequately express how much your support and boundless efforts have meant to the success of Swan Ball 2019.

With gratitude and affection,

Jana and Ellen

John de Jong

Now celebrating 20 years as the creative force behind the unique jewelry house JdJ, designer John de Jong has become known internationally for his signature couture and studio collections as well as bespoke commissions. Born in Canada and raised and educated in Switzerland and North America, a world’s eye view along with the art, architecture and travel are the key inspirations for his stone focused work.

Since establishing the eponymous brand JdJ, John’s life-long passion for design and gems has evolved to produce distinct jewels that are easily recognized for their simplicity, quality and use of vibrant colored stones – each piece merging design and craftmanship seamlessly to produce dynamic creations. Sought after and collected by a discerning clientele, JdJ is frequently seen on the red carpet and has been featured in Ellen, Hello!, O The Oprah Magazine, The Washington Post & Huffington Post.

JdJ has enjoyed recognition with his couture fancy colored sapphire earrings being chosen by Christie’s Geneva as one of a handful of pieces by contemporary designers for their magnificent jewels auction. His sapphire “Spiral” earrings were also recently chosen for the cover of “Masters of Jewelry Design in Canada.” As JdJ begins a milestone anniversary celebrating 20 years of design, John de Jong is honored to add Madame Sophie Gregoire Trudeau – wife of Canadian Prime Minister of Canada, to the list of notable women wearing JdJ.

Clare Armistead

Swan Award Recipient

In every activity in which she is involved, Clare Armistead inspires others with her understated commitment to making a difference. Since the 1950s, she has worked tirelessly, year in and year out, for the community and betters everything that she touches. Countless nonprofits know that she will lend a hand, support an event and encourage their success. Clare never seeks accolades and rather, gains personal benefit and satisfaction from being around others who inspire her. In addition to founding many major charity events that have raised countless millions for nonprofits – such as Blue Moon Festival for the Land Trust; the Ballet Ball for the Nashville Ballet; Sunday in the Park for Friends of Warner Park and of course the Swan Ball for Cheekwood, Clare has organized a cooking school at Cheekwood for five years that hosted Jacques Pepin and other prestigious chefs. Regardless of the activity, Clare puts the time into making her commitment personal and hands on.

Nashville, and its nonprofits, would not be the same without her energy, friendship and support. Regardless of the organization, she finds the most personal joy from “working with so many wonderful people throughout the community that I might have never gotten to know.” At her core, Clare cares deeply about the people who are involved in making a difference in our community and wants to support them.

Auction Chairs

Welcome to the 2019 Swan Ball Auction! More than nine months ago, Swan Ball 2019 Chairmen Jana Davis and Ellen Martin asked us to chair this year’s Swan Ball Auction. What a wonderful adventure it has been! We are beyond grateful for their tremendous enthusiasm and support of the Auction and we will forever treasure the many fun memories we have made with them during this process.

From the start, we all wanted this to be a standout year, with truly unique experiences and valuables with special appeal, a tall order given what has been accomplished in the past. But we believe our collective effort has reaped amazing rewards, and all proceeds raised from the 2019 Auction will provide essential funding to support our beloved Cheekwood.

From the outstanding travel professionals on our Solicitation Committee to the numerous local business owners and generous private donors who have contributed to the 2019 Swan Ball Auction, it has been a delight to be part of this winning and dedicated team. This was truly a collaborative effort that included our fabulous Ball Chairmen, energetic and dedicated Solicitation Committee members, the fantastic Cheekwood Swan Ball staff and the many Swan Ball Auction advisors and past chairmen who have lent us their time and advice. It is a testament to this community’s commitment to Cheekwood that so many individuals and organizations have contributed to this effort.

We are so excited to share with you the many exciting destinations and magnificent treasures that make up the 2019 Swan Ball Auction later this Spring. In the meantime, please mark your calendars to join us at Belle Meade County Club on Thursday, May 16, 2019 for the 2019 Swan Ball Auction.

With gratitude,
