Martha Rivers Ingram
A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Martha Rivers came to Nashville as a Vassar graduate and young bride. Now a mother of four and grandmother of 12, Martha Rivers Ingram still serves as director for the annual Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, but has established deep roots in Nashville – roots that have inextricably connected her to our city’s flourishing business, educational, arts and civic communities. These contributions and more lead us to celebrate her as this year’s Swan Award recipient.
Mrs. Ingram is the Chairman Emerita of the Board of Directors of Ingram Industries Inc., one of America’s largest privately held companies. She continues to serve on the board of Ingram Industries, and that of Ingram Micro Inc. She has served on the boards of directors of Weyerhaeuser Company, Baxter International and Regions Financial Corp.
Her many contributions to education and the arts include her role as Chairman of the Board of Trust of Vanderbilt University, and past terms on the boards of Vassar, Harpeth Hall and Ashley Hall in Charleston. She is a past chairman of the Nashville Symphony Association board of directors, and was vice chairman of the campaign to develop Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Mrs. Ingram continues to serve as a member of the boards of the Nashville Symphony, Tennessee Repertory Theatre and the Nashville Opera Association. She chairs The KeyBoard for Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music, is a member of the Advisory Council of the Nashville Ballet and is a former member of the advisory board of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. She received a special award from the Kennedy Center in 2005 for lifetime accomplishments. She chaired the 1996 Tennessee Bicentennial Commission, and was the guiding force in the creation of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, where she continues to serve as a board member.
In addition to writing at least three books, Mrs. Ingram has received national and international accolades in recognition of her leadership, philanthropy and her role in the civic and cultural life of Tennessee.
